I hate to break this to you, but…
Nothing is original.
When it comes to creativity, most people obsess over creating something brand new. Something never before seen. But this is impossible to do.
Why? All ideas come from somewhere.
Sure, ideas can be fresh. They can look unique. But ultimately ideas are formed by a combination of seemingly unrelated things.
Rock music was formed by combining blues music with distorted guitars.
Movies were formed by combining the invention of film with story.
Cars were formed by combining carriages with engines.
Or take something more specific like Cirque du Soleil. In a world where the circus was dying, they combined elements of circus with theater. They now create plot-driven circus shows that have made Cirque du Soleil one of the wealthiest performing art companies in the world.
As you can see, all ideas come from a combination of ideas. That’s how innovation happens. Nothing is truly original.
Or as Ecclesiastes 1:19 says,
“… there’s nothing new under the sun.”
So don’t feel bad about combining things to create something “fresh.”
Because in this world, there are two kinds of people:
- Those who combine to create – and admit it.
- Those who combine to create – and deny it.
IDEAS FOR ACTION
- Take the pressure off. You’re not a fraud. You’re not a failure. You are creative. So, consume and combine – that’s how creativity is formed.
